Katarina Witt started to ice skate as early as age 5 years. Soon, her talents were evident and she was invited to Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. This is where she saw the trainer Jutta M ller. Witt became a star in 1982, when she finished second at her first World Championships at Copenhagen. Since then, her elegance and grace have caught the attention of everyone. Olympic success at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for figure skating in women's after a fiercely contested contest. In a more competitive competition, four years later, Witt took home the medal. She didn't win the free-skating contest, however, she was awarded gold for her performances during the compulsory figure and short programme. Witt was the first repeated winner in women's figure skating after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career acting. Although she didn't get a single medal she was awed by fans even with the fact that she finished seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
